Temporary Downtime

March 1st, 2010 23:08 GMT in Fixes Funding Round

Hi all,

As you no doubt noticed the last 24 hours have been a bit topsy turvy for Evolution. In summary the most recent server invoice has now been paid (for which many thanks go out to those that have been donating) and as such Evo will remain online for the moment.

The round will continue where it left off as if no ticks have passed at 00:00 GMT 02/03/2010.

As an aside, for those that are doing so, we ask that you please turn off any adblockers you may be using and remind those that have donated, if you wish to turn off ads you can do so in your profile settings.

Remember, if you want Evolution to stay online, we need your support!.

Glad I checked back... wondered if Evo was gone.

Does Neon still own the server or is evo now hosted on a server owned by the hosting company? If Neon still owns the server then it could be hosted from his house and would save some of the running costs.

My ad-blocker is so good I totally didn't notice the ads were gone.  :-/  Ads are allowed through again on playevo.com.

Hosting a server like this from one's home usually isn't feasible because of the network connection.  Home broadband connections generally have high download speeds and low upload speeds.  What's a download for us, the players, is an upload for the server.  Neon would have to do the math for the deals he could get, but I'm guessing between getting a real network connection to the home would be expensive.  Electricity hungry servers (there used to be 3, I think, for evo) bump the  cost, too.  I had an old 2 CPU workstation with server class CPUs and SCSI drives that added about $10 US to my monthly electric bill.

Plus, servers are loud, so that's disruptive in an apartment, and they should be run at cooler temperatures than what's comfortable for humans or they don't last as long.  There's all sorts of indirect costs to running servers, human and monetary.
