Hi all,
It has been decided, on balance, that it does not make sense for development to continue on Evolution.
We are however having one last big bug-fixing session before calling it a day. We'd like you to make known to us any small problems with the game that can be resolved without too much effort. Details here.
To the three people who donated towards a new version of Evolution totalling £89: Thank you for your support, but of course if you would like your donations returned as agreed then do PM me over at (1,1,2:a) and i'll sort it out for you.
We *will* keep Evolution online, for as long as people want to play it. This does, as always, require that the server that runs the game is paid for. To that end, we will possibly place a donation-o-meter on the Overview page so that it is clear to everyone when the game is about to fall off the face of the earth. A higher population in the game would mean higher advertising revenue and more donations -- but this is all entirely up to the players. There is no advertising happening for Evolution or any other 'official' efforts to bring in more players.
Thanks,
neonDragon

you can have my donation back, and I will donate in future, good idea about the totaliser giving us an indication of when funds are running low.
Would be great to see Neon working on a better version eventually when uni all finished and time on hands, as this can only increase the membership further.
Nice to be back

Neon, what's the monthly server payment? If it's within the realms of my overdraft I'd be happy to contribute, or cajole others to share the monthly cost.
I play several 'games', including one called The Mortgage. It costs a heck of a lot and I get to live somewhere :) I'm sure a regular money drop to you to keep this site up and running, and keep a few bob in your pocket, will be a whole quantum less - approximately, of course.
And, yes - nice to be back!

Yes it is good to be back......i have no idea of what the annual/monthly cost of keeping the server going but to know roughly what it costs would be a big advantage so that a drive to cover it can put forward.

Agreed - when you know your target it's much easier to achieve it :)

.. I don't see a 1,1,2 b... Anyway, you can keep my donation. Like I said before, a small donation is worth the 4 years I've played this game. If nothing else, use it to buy yourself a drink! ;)

it really is a good game. it takes a special type of ocd player to be online to launch at certain times and again later to recall monkeys. unfortunately the same ocd component that makes it great also makes attracting new players less likely

I have a spare server - can you give me an indication on how much space / bandwidth etc is needed to run this game
Administration wrote at March 5th 2010, 21:07:
A "donation-o-meter" will be added to Evolution in the near future providing a total for donations for that month. For now thanks to everyone who continues to donate.
Mikey, we suspect you aren't offering hardware, but are instead offering to host the game from one of your servers. While this is appreciated please be aware that for security reasons we can't accept unsolicited hosting from 3rd parties.

ok, i just chiped in again to make it going for a while longer.
i have a question/idea - why not iron out the bugs (no major new stuff), and than make it playeble through (oh let's say) Facebook. That way you bring the game to the userbase. This will also give the game some exposure and, who knows, it may even get picked up by zenga games or something...

Nice job on the donate-a-meter. but how much will be subtracted every/month/day/hour, and how often is it updated?
Reincarnation wrote at March 7th 2010, 05:07:
So...the 0-100 bar is that 100% funded? Or 0-100 Euros or whatever?...I'm not English.
Ithryn wrote at March 7th 2010, 05:18:
I would suspect when the meter is full. thats that month's hosting taken care off.
Mefisto, neon had a project to make an evolution version for facebook, I suspect it fell through for the moment. The current ev5 model would new a lot of changes to be able to be run through fb the way he would like I suspect.

so to keep the server connected and in the center costs 100 pounds every month?
Patrickthestarfish wrote at March 7th 2010, 21:00:
Good Question which has been asked before and never answered.......i will donate once i find out what the running costs per month are.
The meter is a good idea but what most need to know are HOW MUCH/MONTH
Mefisto wrote at March 8th 2010, 02:55:
the meter is 100 pounds and it is paid up right now. be patient people and measure how long it takes to reset. i bet it's per month or maybe two.
and as far as facebook - i have looked at their api and yea if you wanted to build a bottom up facebook app you'd have to rewrite evo probably, but it doesn't really have to be a bottom up build. imo creating a facebook sandbox with a frame that holds evo in it will suffice as a simple hack. Granted it won't be really tied into facebook i.e. login into evo at the page - facebook id no good; good ol' broken buddies - no facebook friends; ingame messaging and forum - not connected to facebook comm; no notifications and no translations probably. It'll just be plain old evo in a facebook frame. BUT! you can create a game app page for it...

rather than a meter...maybe have a "evo is funded through the day XX/XX/XXXX" display?
Ithryn wrote at March 9th 2010, 15:21:
It's was/is going to be hosted at his home or something. But that idea may have gone under since people are actually donating to keep it hosted in the datacenter.

So, the more players, the more likely it is that Evo can stay online? (or maybe this has been dealt with already, this was released some time back). Either way, I'll be telling my friends about it.
